Helsinki, Finland – 31st March 2023 – A new white paper has been released exploring the use of augmented reality (AR) technology in industrial drones, with a focus on adding AR to the criteria of the Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) to minimise risks when flying drones.
The white paper, titled “Augmented Reality in Industrial Drones: Enhancing Safety Through SORA,” was produced by Anarky Labs who create software for drones. Anarky’s software AirHUD superimposes AR on the real world environment using AR glasses like HoloLens 2 so that pilots can see their drones, even if flying beyond the visual line of sight. The paper provides an in-depth examination of how AR can be used to enhance the safety of drone operations in industrial settings and improve situational awareness of the pilots.
Industrial drones are increasingly being used in a wide range of applications, including law enforcement, search and rescue, inspection of infrastructure, surveying of large areas, and defence. However, the use of drones in industrial settings can pose significant risks to people, property, and the environment.
The SORA is a risk assessment regulatory procedure that helps drone operators and lawmakers identify and minimise these risks.
The new white paper argues that the addition of AR to the SORA criteria can further enhance the safety of drone operations. By providing real-time, real world information to drone operators, AR can help them make more informed decisions and avoid hazards that may not be immediately visible.
